Reflection for The Holy Family

Family life is messy! We might be tempted to think that the Holy Family we celebrate this weekend – the first Sunday after Christmas – was a perfect little family with no issues. How mistaken we actually are!

A careful analysis of the Scriptures will soon reveal that Joseph, Mary and Jesus had to negotiate the normal struggles of family life. They certainly did not have an easy life. The rosy picture we have might mean that we are measuring our families against a family that did not exist. This may cause us to feel defeated and, perhaps even, discouraged by the messiness of our own family life.

There are five obvious struggles the Holy Family have – the Scriptures reveal these right at the beginning in the infancy narratives! Join Fr Russell Pollitt SJ as he reflects on these challenges.

You can find the texts that this reflection is based on in your bible, or simply just hover your mouse over the following references and the texts will also appear:

Genesis 15:1-6,21:1-3; Psalm 127; Colossians 3:12-21 & Luke 2:22-40.
