LISTEN: Reflection for the Second Sunday – Year C

This day in Cana is the opening, or first day of the new creation. For John, Jesus is the later wine which completes the wedding feast begun with the first serving of wine, or the original creation of the universe.

There are a few lessons that we can learn from this account: i) This miracle continues taking place in our own lives as well. God continues breathing over our chaos, our unformedness, our darkness and bringing us into the light, through the Light that is Jesus; ii) The journey of change, transformation, cannot be undertaken alone. We need others – mentors, inspirations, examples, friends – who prompt us and empower us just as Mary prompted Jesus; iii) Over and over in the Gospels we learn how giving of ourselves, of what we have – even when there is some resistance in us – like Jesus resisted in John’s account – always frees us for much more. Jesus’ public identity was revealed and, from this point, he is freed to minister publicly.
