Spiritual Accompaniment Training - Level 2: Spiritual Direction Training (SDT)

  • Are you a mature Christian?
  • Do you give regular time to your own prayer?
  • Are you in your own spiritual direction?
  • Do you have a desire to accompany others in their relationship with God?

If so, you may be called to the ministry of spiritual direction. This is a ministry of listening to people, helping them to pray and to discern God’s action and invitation in their lives.

The Jesuit Institute offers the opportunity for intensive training to people who have the gift and call to be spiritual directors. The Spiritual Direction Training (SDT) takes place over three years, predominantly online but with two in-person modules.

Due to the constraints of COVID-19, we are offering special opportunities for those who may have the charism for this training but who may not have had the chance to meet the prerequisites for the SDT. This will be done before we begin our next course in March 2021.

Prerequisites for the training are:

  • An introductory course in Ignatian Spirituality: Hearts on Fire (Opportunities for this will be made available in the latter part of 2020.)
  • Spiritual Accompaniment Level 1, also known as Prayer Guide Training. (This will be offered in the second half of January 2021 over two weekends online and, subject to sufficient participants, there will also be an in-person option at our offices in Johannesburg.)
  • To be in your own ongoing spiritual direction.

Application process and prerequisites:

      1. Write to Margaret Backwell <training@jesuitinstitute.org.za> and request an application form.
      2. Complete and return the application form.
      3. On the basis of your application you may be contacted for an interview which may be conducted in-person or online.
      4. If you have already completed all the prerequisites for the training, and may be suited to this ministry, we will accept you for the SDT course (Spiritual Accompaniment Level 2).
      5. If have not yet completed the prerequisites, you will have the opportunity to do so in late January and early February. Should you satisfactorily pass Spiritual Accompaniment Level 1, you will be admitted to the 2021 course.
