Mindfulness Workshop: On 29 August the Institute hosted an online workshop on the practice of mindfulness. The day was led by Russell Pollitt SJ and Gillian Hugo. Thirty-three people participated in the day. The feedback was very encouraging and a follow-up workshop is planned in early October.

Spiritual Exercises Training: The third module of the Spiritual Exercises training course took place online via Zoom from 20-23 August and focused on equipping participants to accompany retreatants making the Spiritual Exercises as they pray the life of Christ and make significant life decisions. Participants took part from Cape Town, KZN, Bloemfontein, Port Elizabeth and Johannesburg. The use of the combination of pre-recorded talks and time to process these online as a group and in small break out rooms allowed those taking part to engage in animated discussion and to connect their learning with their ongoing practicum work.

Seminary Retreat: Puleng Matsaneng and Russell Pollitt SJ gave the annual preached retreat to the students of St Francis Xavier Seminary in Cape Town via Zoom. Students from all over the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference area attend the seminary as they begin their formation journey to the priesthood. Despite a struggle with connectivity and loadshedding the retreat seemed to be successful. Puleng and Russell both agreed that being present with the students was much better than preaching on Zoom!

Social Media Workshop: Russell Pollitt SJ with communications lawyer and adjunct professor at WITS University, Justine Limpitlaw, conducted a two day social media workshop online with the students of St Francis Xavier Seminary in Cape Town. The workshop is intended to help students navigate the digital world and use it with integrity. It is always interesting to listen to their experiences and thoughts about the digital world.
