News from the Jesuit Institute
Contemplative Living: Fr Laurence Freeman OSB from the World Community for Christian Meditation (WCCM) visited South Africa from 5 – 15 September 2019. He gave talks and introduced Christian meditation to over 800 people, including teachers, learners and public audiences from various faith backgrounds. During his visit he met with Cardinal Napier, Archbishop Brislin and Bishop Tsoke. The visit included a day-retreat at Origins Retreat Centre. The events were co-hosted by the Jesuit Institute, Catholic Institute for Education and WCCM South Africa.
8-Day Retreat: A wonderful eight-day retreat starting on 23 September was held at Lumko Retreat and Conference Centre.The retreat ended on 1 October – the Feast of St Thérèse of Lisieux. We had a wonderful mixed group of people from different denominations and walks of life taking time to deepen their relationship with God.
South African Christian Leadership Initiative (SACLI): As part of their Decade of Reconciliation (2016 – 2019), SACLI arranged a day retreat at the Apartheid Museum. SACLI endeavours to bring communities together to reflect on the journey from racism to reconciliation. Puleng Matsaneng represented the Jesuit Institute at the meeting. Attendees enjoyed the conversations and gained much from each other.
Tsoseletsa Retreat and Prayer Guide Training – Bloemfontein: Meshack Shaku and Maki Makgothi, who are volunteers for the Jesuit Institute, travelled to Bloemfontein to train new guides for Tsoseletsa Retreats. This became a bonding experience for the team and helped them find a common understanding of their relationship with God.
Tsoseletsa Retreat and Prayer Guide Training – Gaborone: Jesuit Institute volunteers, Morongoa Selepe and Maki Makgothi, ran the retreat and training assessment for new guides. Trainees were eager to learn and grow. All the guides in training shared how being part of the Prayer Guide Training helped change their lives. The volunteers also shared how amazing it is to experience the joy from people when they encounter prayer.
Seminary Retreat: Puleng Matsaneng and Russell Pollitt SJ ran a retreat for the Orientation Seminary in Cape Town. The seminarians come from diverse parts of our country. Thirty seminarians participated wholeheartedly in the retreat and found it a meaningful experience.

Fr Laurence is a Benedictine monk and a teacher of Christian meditation. He’s the author of several books on the topic and has been involved in the World Community for Christian Meditation since 1980.
