Institute Connects March 2020
News from the Jesuit Institute
Book launch: The Jesuit Institute South Africa launched their latest publication, God’s Universe: Our Responsibility on 25 February 2020. Speaking at the launch, author Fr Anthony Egan SJ, explained how he takes readers through a journey reflecting on the cosmos, evolution and the Earth. He attempts to answer how science and religion, Christian ethics and ecology are connected. How is God present in all of this?
The book is easy to read and challenges us to seek the truth in the world we live in. It can be read at any time, not only during Lent.
Cape Town exposed beyond the beaches: The Jesuit Institute South Africa’s film, “Cape Town exposed beyond the beaches” (2019), has been featured in KTO, the French Catholic Television on its program ‘Churches of the world’ which discussed faith issues regarding South Africa. Our collaborative work continues externally with many diverse partners including Catholic organisations.

Tsoseletsa Retreat: Tsoseletsa took place at St Michaels and All Angels Anglican church – Alexandra. Fr Matthew Pyrc SJ, who is presently doing his tertianship in Stellenbosch, experienced his first Tsoseletsa and the wonderful response from the people who participated.
Spiritual Exercises Training: This one-year intensive specialization course began with the first module held from 5-8 March at Lumko in Benoni. Fourteen participants from around the country are taking part in the training which will equip them to give the Full Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius. Annemarie Paulin-Campbell and Trevor Hudson are the lead trainers.
Ash Wednesday: Once again, we hosted the annual Ash Wednesday of Recollection at the Jesuit Institute. Adri-Marie Van Heerden, a graduate of the Jesuit Institute Spirituality training, offered a series of talks and reflections. Using the image of ash, she reflected on how that can be a metaphor in our spiritual journey of coming to greater wholeness. The day ended with Mass celebrated by Fr Russell Pollitt SJ and the distribution of ashes. A good number of people attended and expressed appreciation for the opportunity to stop and reflect at the beginning of Lent.
Fr Russell Pollitt SJ will lead a quiet day of reflection for Lent
