Introduction to the New Testament: For the next 3 months, Matthew Charlesworth SJ is lecturing – online – the first-year undergraduate module on Introduction to the New Testament, with a focus on the Acts of the Apostles and the Synoptic Gospels at St Augustine College. He was asked to stand-in at the last minute because one of their lecturers fell ill.

St Augustine offers a full range of degrees in the humanities: from Bachelor and Honours through Master to Doctoral degrees. Fields of study include Education, Applied Ethics, Peace Studies, Theology and Philosophy. In addition, the Private Tertiary Institution offers a 2-year mixed mode programme for the Higher Certificate in Biblical Studies. Find out more here.

Online retreats: In July, the Institute hosted two different styles of online 8-day retreats.  One of these was similar to a residential 8-day retreat but was done from the retreatant’s home. Each retreatant entered into silence and spent four or five hours praying each day. They met their retreat director daily. Every evening the group gathered together for prayer.

At the same time, another group of retreatants who needed to continue with their usual commitments made an 8-day retreat in daily life. They put aside some time each day to pray and to chat with their guide.

Including guides, just under 30 people participated in this new way of making a retreat. People expressed having found the experience very fruitful and a way to go on retreat and deepen their relationship with God despite the constraints of the lockdown.
