St Francis of Assisi is reputed to have said: ‘Go and preach, if necessary use words.’
As the disciples were trusted to prepare the way in the various towns for Jesus, we are trusted to prepare our own contexts; families, work places and communities for people to be able to be more receptive to hearing God. Where the timing isn’t right or people aren’t ready, Jesus is not asking us to bang our heads against a brick wall. Instead we are to go to where the harvest is ripe for the picking. ‘For the harvest is rich but the labourers are few.’
