We are a fearful people. We live in fear-filled times, we fear for our country, our world and our Church.

In this Sunday’s Gospel we read “In the evening of the first day of the week, the doors were closed in the room where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews.” And repeatedly, we hear this echo of fear in the Gospels.

Today, we celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost in our Churches throughout the world. This celebration in our Church is the Lord making good on the promise he kept to his followers, and we are included. He did return, his death was not the end.

The disciples, now assured of the Spirit, are led to action. So too, the experience of God’s spirit in our lives should inspire us to do the same and to believe in the mission Jesus left for his disciples then, as he leaves for us now: “As the Father sent me, so I am sending you”.
