In South Africa we celebrate the joyful Solemnity of the Ascension this Sunday. It is transferred from the Thursday so that we can all participate.

Part of the good news of the Ascension is that we are to take up the responsibility of Jesus’s mission. We are called to embody Jesus now in our world and continue his mission.

As St Teresa of Avila said:

“Christ has no body now but ours,
No hands, no feet on earth but ours,
Ours are the eyes with which he looks compassion on the world…
Ours are the feet with which he walks to do good.”

We, like the Apostles, are invited to wait with eager anticipation for the promised coming of the Holy Spirit which empowers us for this responsibility.
