How to live a Happy Life — The spirituality and psychology of well-being

Join us for this series presented by Fr David Marcotte SJ, PhD, professor of psychology and associate director of clinical training at Fordham University in New York.

“The main goal is to help people be their best self and use that best self to make a difference in the lives of others — to contribute to the community in a meaningful way.”

David Marcotte SJ

Father Marcotte teaches strategies to increase well-being and coping with stress. He believes that meditation and contemplative practices are an essential part of well-being and has done empirical studies to show this, which he will share with participants.

Tsoseletsa Retreat (Picture: Puleng Matsaneng)

Tsoseletsa 2019: During the month of April, the Jesuit Institute ran Tsoseletsa Retreats in Diepsloot at Sacred Heart parish and in Soweto at Our Lady of Fatima parish. Both retreats were very well attended. For many, it was their first experience of Ignatian spirituality. At the end of these retreats, people shared how wonderful the experience had been for them. They expressed a desire for more of the Ignatian experience. We are in the process of organising this next step and will offer them Ngihamba neNkosi training.

Prayer Guides during Week of Guided Prayer (Picture: Dr Dijeng Pearl Lebatha)

Week of Guided Prayer: A week of guided prayer was offered at St Peter’s Anglican Church in Mogoditshane Botswana from the 24-30 March. For some of the Prayer Guides who completed their training last year, this was the first opportunity to put into practice what they had learned. Fifteen people received one-on-one retreat guidance every day during that week.

Ignatian spirituality is spreading widely in Botswana due to the initiative and dedication of Sr Bernadette Masekemela, Dr Dijeng Pearl Pelang and the team of volunteer trainers and supervisors who prepared the new guides including Sue Edwards, Lynn Fletcher and Sr Goretti Rule.

Easter Celebrations with the Carmelite Sisters (Pictures: Ursula van Nierop)

Easter Triduum Retreat: The annual Easter Triduum retreat was held at Lumko Retreat and Conference Centre. It was a very meaningful experience for those who attended. We joined with the Carmelite Sisters to celebrate the stations of the cross and the liturgies of the Triduum. This year, in addition to the inputs giving guidance for personal prayer, we also used some creative methods to help retreatants enter into the silence and waiting of Holy Saturday. This included the use of film and art and an opportunity, for those who wished, to share their experience of the retreat with fellow retreatants.
