Fr Xavier Jeyaraj SJ

Fr. Xavier Jeyaraj SJ (born India 1962; entered the Jesuits 1982; ordained 1993) is Secretary of the Social Justice and Ecology Secretariat of the Society of Jesus.Fr Xavier Jeyaraj SJ is a scholar on extractivism and mining and its impact on indigenous people and the environment. He is also a trained social worker, a lawyer and a human rights activist. Early in his career, he taught Sociology at St. Xavier College, Kolkata, India. He then founded the Province Social Action Centre called ‘Udayani’ in 1998 which he developed and led until 2007, working with the most deprived santal tribals and dalits in the slums and villages around Kolkata.He also served as the Secretary for Social apostolate in South Asia for 5 years; developed and initiated the MSW course in St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata before taking over as the Secretary for Social Justice & Ecology for the Society of Jesus in Rome, Italy in June 2017, where he leads and coordinates social apostolate for the entire Society of Jesus.
