Advent can lose its focus and get forgotten because of all the other things that demand our attention at this time of the year. Many retail outlets have robbed us of Advent, they have been advertising Christmas since the end of October!

The Scripture texts on this 4th Sunday of Advent try to focus us on the things that are of importance. They offer us three focal points in the chaos and busyness around us – ones that, hopefully, help us dig deeper. These are: 1. that we need to make space for God; 2. that we need to reflect on our expectations of others and God as well as, perhaps, God’s expectation of us; 3. that we are offered, if we take Christmas seriously, a new vision.
