In this week’s Gospel Matthew offers a very contrary picture to the one we had last week. Last week Jesus gave Peter the “keys of the kingdom”. This week Jesus says to Peter “Get behind me satan!” Peter has not grasped God’s ways. He is more like us than we really would like to admit.

This encounter between Jesus and Peter teaches us much about the spiritual life: what we think we know, perhaps, we don’t; what we would rather not know, we ought to know!
