News from the Jesuit Institute
Bicentennial of the Catholic Church in South Africa: In August the Institute published the first article in a series on the Catholic Church in South Africa in the Daily Maverick. The Church will be celebrating 200 years in the country in 2018. Each of the articles will look at the Church’s role in SA thematically. The articles are being written by Anthony Egan SJ. Tsoseletsa: Puleng Matsaneng lead Tsoseletsa at St Peter Claver Parish – Soweto. Puleng reports that people of all ages attended and says that it was encouraging to see their commitment to the week, right up until the last day.
Ignatian Day in Kwazulu-Natal: The first Ignatian day for KZN took place on 19 August at St Agnes Anglican Church in Kloof. The theme was Finding God in All Things. Annemarie Paulin-Campbell gave a talk introducing people to the idea of spiritual direction. Hugh Jenkins spoke about Ignatian spirituality in relation to different Christian traditions and Brenda Timmer led an experience of praying with Scripture. The day was enthusiastically received by approximately 45 people who attended.
Church and Media: Russell Pollitt SJ travelled to the plenary session of the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference in August to talk to the bishops about the Church and media. Ranjeni Munusamy from Tiso Blackstar (Times Media) spoke to the bishops in the same session about the state of the nation post the ANC Policy Conference. Editor of the Southern Cross, Günther Simmermacher, and Radio Veritas’ Brian Mahlanga OP, were also present.
Postulants/Novices Media Workshop: Russell Pollitt SJ led a workshop for postulants and novices from different religious congregations on the use of media – specifically social media – at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Johannesburg
Coming soon: A new Catholic Media platform is close to being launched in Southern Africa in collaboration with the Jesuit Institute South Africa. Spotlight will offer commentary and analyses on church and society. It will be firmly rooted in Catholic Social Teaching. Watch this space for more exciting news…

Laudato Si’: The Jesuit Institute published a workbook appropriate for anyone wanting to engage with the contents of Pope Francis’ Encyclical Letter ‘Care for our Common Home’. The book is suitable for clergy, church/parish groups, teachers, catechists etc. It contextualises the issues Pope Francis addresses and it offers questions for reflection or discussion after each section. The book was endorsed by Bishop Able Gabuza – Chair of the SACBC’s Justice and Peace Commission, Theologian Fr Chris Chatteris SJ, and Prof Bob Scholes from the Global Change Institute at WITS University.
