Lenten Prayer Reflections by Ron Boudreaux SJ

Lord Yahweh has opened my ear and I have not resisted, I have not turned away. I have offered my back to those who struck me, my cheeks to those who plucked my beard; I have not turned my face away from insult and spitting.  Lord Yahweh comes to my help. (Isaiah 50:5-7 )

Jesus did not turn away from danger or even death. He had chosen to follow his Father’s wishes with immovable conviction. He set his face like flint in the direction of Jerusalem, where he would face his ultimate challenge. He knew he would be in danger because of sinful human nature. John tells us in his gospel, “No one had to tell him about human nature. He [Jesus] understood it well.” Jesus knew that humans are betrayers. Yet, his love for humanity was far greater than any fear he might have felt.

Lord Jesus, teach me to rise above my own fears.

Teach me to allow you to lead me in life so that I do not give in to the seductions of the world and betray you.
