New directions for the Church in South Africa?

At a recent academic conference of theological societies in Stellenbosch that I attended, a number of findings emerged that deserve some thought. The most striking was the fact that Christianity in South Africa is rapidly going Pentecostal, whether in its European-North American or African Initiated Church forms.

Caritas in Veritate: A new way of economic life

Pope Benedict XVI’s new social encyclical, Caritas in Veritate [Charity/Love in Truth] is a challenge to the way we think about economics. Drawing on the riches of Catholic Social Thought, particularly that of Pope Paul VI, he proposes a new approach to integral human and economic development based on the principles of solidarity and subsidiarity.

We work with people from the business, political and educational sectors as well as those from various faith backgrounds. We are keen to engage with all who have an interest in improving our society.

The Jesuit Institute is dedicated to providing training and encouraging debate on current social and religious issues from a faith perspective and to stimulating critical reflection, research and dialogue.

The Jesuit Institute provides reflection and training on, and critical analysis of, contemporary social and religious issues from a Catholic perspective. We are motivated by the service of faith and the promotion of justice.
